Electro-Acupuncture for Pelvic Pain: PEARL Study Update

By | Knowledge Centre | No Comments

I am pleased to share an update from our ongoing clinical research study looking at whether electro-acupuncture may help reduce pelvic pain in women with suspected endometriosis or long-standing gynaecological pain.
This study is being carried out by myself in collaboration with the gynaecology dept. at St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim Norway and aims to explore acupuncture treatment for women living with chronic pelvic pain.

A Milestone Reached: First Cohort Completed

We are pleased to share that Cohort 1 has now completed treatment, with 14 women taking part in the first phase of the study. All participants experience moderate to severe pelvic pain and are currently waiting for further investigation or surgery. Reaching this stage is an important milestone and confirms that the study design and treatment schedule are both workable and well tolerated.

What Is Electro-Acupuncture?
Electro-acupuncture is a modern form of traditional acupuncture. Very fine needles are placed at specific points on the body, and a gentle electrical current is applied. Most people describe the sensation as mild — such as a light tapping or buzzing feeling. Treatments are closely monitored to ensure comfort and safety throughout.

What Does Taking Part Involve?

Women in the treatment group receive:
9 electro-acupuncture sessions over 3 weeks
Each session lasts around 30 minutes
Treatments take place while participants are waiting for surgery or further investigation
Participants also complete questionnaires before and after treatment to help us understand changes in pain, daily functioning, and overall quality of life.

How Has the Experience Been So Far?

Although the research data is still being analysed, early observations from the first cohort have been encouraging:
Attendance and engagement have been excellent
Treatments have been well tolerated
Individual experiences vary, and any improvements in symptoms will be assessed carefully as part of the formal analysis.

Why This Research Matters

Chronic pelvic pain and suspected endometriosis can affect many aspects of life — including work, relationships, sleep, and emotional wellbeing.
While acupuncture is already used by many women, there is still limited research within hospital settings. This study aims to help clarify whether electro-acupuncture could play a supportive role alongside conventional medical care.

What Happens Next?

With the first cohort complete, the study is now moving into its next phase.
Recruitment for Cohort 2 is taking place and treatment will begin after Easter
Participants will continue to be followed over time
Both quantitative data (such as pain scores and quality-of-life measures) and qualitative data (women’s personal experiences of treatment) will be analysed

We expect to publish the first research findings later this year, sharing results with patients, clinicians, and the wider healthcare community
We are deeply grateful to the women who have taken part so far. Their willingness to contribute their time and experiences is essential to improving future care for others living with pelvic pain.
Further updates will be shared as the study progresses.
